The “Marvel Legends” line by Toy Biz is shredding all the rules on how much articulation an action figure can possess. The Phoenix likeness has 40 points of articulation. Juggernaut has 42. According to Product Manager Jesse Falcon, such advances don't happen overnight. From his office in New York, he says, “It’s a little more complicated than doing a regular figure, or doing figures the way we were doing them five or six years ago. It's difficult on every side of it: Working on the (design) up front, (then presenting) it to a sculptor so he builds it in a way that makes it easier for our engineers at Hong Kong to actually design and develop the tools that will fit and work together. It’s an ongoing process, ’cause if you look at Assortment One of ‘Marvel Legends’ compared to what we're doing right now, the articulation's improved a great deal.
“They're fine-tuning (what) we’ve been doing throughout the assortment. The torso articulation went through I think three different generations. I don’t think we’re happy with it yet. It keeps going back and forth. Every aspect (gets refined). The necks on the figures are one thing that I think we finally got worked out to a point where we really like it. The whole thing is, how do we make these move as much as possible without sacrificing the aesthetics?”
If there's been a single “trouble spot,” it’s figures’ midsections. According to Falcon, “The toughest thing was always the ball-joint hips. You need all the mobility of a ball-joint hip but you don’t want to sacrifice the detail in that area. I think we've come to a point now where we can actually put texture plates onto all of the balls of all the ball joints and actually sculpt detail on (them). Five years ago, we asked to do that, and our engineers said, ‘Nah, it's too difficult, you can't do that.’ It's (a matter of progress) on every aspect (from) the upfront design to the sculptor. The real crucial part is getting it done in Hong Kong to a point where you're happy with it. It’s much more complicated than doing a figure with five points of articulation,” he laughed.
Asked how long it takes to bring a character from the sketchboard to completion, Falcon admits, “It varies in regards to who we’re selling to and when we want it. If a retailer comes to us and is like, “We want a special five pack of figures and we want it by this date,’ that date and their order will predicate the difficulty level of what we can get done. And, obviously, how much they want this thing to retail for (plays a role). If they want something with all new tooling, we need to hustle on getting it done, versus just doing new parts, heads and hands: Taking a character we already have tooled up and turning it into another character. It really all depends on the ship date. I can spend two years in development on something. I know what we’re going to be doing for at least the next eighteen months. I’ve already got people working on that so that when other projects come up that are emergencies, I won’t have to double and triple their work schedule.”
Given the effort involved in crafting an action figure, Falcon and the gang at Toy Biz obviously need to pick and choose their subjects wisely. Asked if there’s a particular methodology he uses, Falcon sighs, “It’s a process, man. It’s a real process. I’ll come into a meeting with my suggestions of what I think we should be doing, based on when the assortment will hit. I think we have three to four assortments coming out in a year now. We’ve got three planned for this year, another four planned for next year, plus gift packs for this year, gift packs for next year.
“We really look at what Marvel is doing as a whole, Marvel as a company. It’s (done) from a standpoint of, ‘What entertainment is going to get a push during this quarter?’ It was no mistake that the Punisher action figure is in ‘Marvel Legends’ Assortment Six, when there was a movie that just came out. That's the movie version. We tied that in. That’s the first thing: What movies and TV shows are going to get a big push at this point?"
Falcon also takes into account the “Marvel Legends” audience.
“We know, looking at our (sales) numbers, that kids are buying this more than collectors. As much as collectors love this line and are into it, our sales numbers (suggest) there’s no way that this could all be just held up by collectors. If that was the case -- If there were that many collectors out there -- that would be awesome, but I just don't think there are.”
It must be rewarding to know that the products are not just reaching an elite crowd, that they have a universal appeal. According to Falcon, it is rewarding, and also the result of deliberate efforts on the part of Toy Biz.
“We’ve been trying to do that for a while with all of our lines. If you look at Spider-Man movie stuff, the play features are designed for kids but the aesthetics and the detail and the articulation is built for a collector. We’ve been trying to do that, because all of the guys that work back here, our designers and product managers, we’re all big nerds. We're all super-big toy collectors and comic book fans. The question is, ‘Would we buy something like that?’ We ask ourselves that question, and if we would buy it, then what else do we need to put in there to make sure a kid would like it, too?
“A great example of that (philosophy) is ‘Spider-Man Classic.’ We’ve done product testing on this and we know that kids love ‘Spider-Man Classic.’ There's a huge kid audience out there."
Coming up: Why we won’t see a full-blown “Man Thing” toy blitz, and why secondary characters are being scaled back from the Marvel movie lines.

Hi I think the marvel legends figure are great and the articulation is fantastic I have one of each figure and I pose them open them build cities and enviroments for them . we need scale to scale figures for example make Galactus 18 to 20 inches tall . not 10 inches and the other figures are 7 and 8 inches .lets go and please no more wolverines. Thank You. Vee
Posted by: Vee at May 11, 2004 02:55 PMI'm a huge fan of the Marvel Lengends figures, and all I really got to say is keep up the good work. I can't wait for the new lineup that's coming. But I also agree on the wolverine figures, don't make so much of him.
Posted by: Brian Van Dyken at May 11, 2004 08:43 PMI really think that marvel has done a great job with
the marvel legends figures, I hope that one day
they will come out with an avengers boxed set and one for the masters of evil. more characters like ultron, nightcrawler and thanos could also be made as well.
the xmen in the lines have been great, but where is professor x when you need him? a nightcrawler would be awesome too. and please leave the 'play features' to the spidey classics lines. ooh and i worship all who put in to the production of marvel legends. thanks
Posted by: john at May 11, 2004 11:40 PMI second the motion for Professor X!!! And a scale Sentinel as some kind of boxed set would be awesome too. But this is seriously the best toy line out there, and Jesse and everyone at Toy Biz has a lot to be proud of.
Posted by: Jason at May 12, 2004 12:25 AMYeah! Ultron and thanos are the shiznit
Posted by: Bob at May 12, 2004 12:53 AMI agree with Marvelman20 about the Avengers box set. I am chomping at the bit to get Hawkeye, Vision, and the Silver Iron Man. Two characters I would like to see are an Avengers version of The Beast, circa 1978, ala George Perez and his best friend from the mansion Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man, complete with gray hair, safari jacket and sunglasses. Now those are Marvel Legends. The current Beast looks too ferocious to be the loveable clown that I grew up reading in the Avengers. Till then, Make Mine Marvel Legends.
Posted by: Steve at May 12, 2004 01:34 AMMaybe Toybiz shouldn't do chase figures anymore. Please let Phoeniz be the last one. I'm having extreme difficulty getting Goliath. :/
But they're really fun figures to play with! :D
Posted by: John Wu at May 12, 2004 01:55 AMJust want to say a big THANK YOU to Jesse and the gang at Toy Biz for giving this 30-ish' fanboy the Marvel action figures he had always dreamed of for years! Kids may or may not be the biggest buyers of this line, but don't dismiss us collectors! Kids always follow what grown-ups do, and when they see us grabbing these ML's by the armful, you bet'cha they're gonna do the same! Keep up the good work!
Posted by: Carl at May 12, 2004 02:15 AMGreat work on the marvel legends. There are many good things I can say about them but it would take me an hour to do so. I am just going to say what I think should be done. Remove the cut articulation at the shin; it looks bad and if you pay close attention, it is not needed. The articulation of big guys become loose very easily: Thor-legs, Colossus-torso, Sabertooth-legs, but Smart Hulk was great. Stop making so many wolverines back-to-back, and give us more villains. Leg articulation of women(ex.elecktra)looks horrible. Besides this, Good work.
Posted by: Hector at May 12, 2004 03:27 AMGreat interview.
In my area, collectors are the only ones buying Marvel Legends. The retailers know this and have tried to purchase cases with adequate ratios, but this has been impossible. My local toy store did a great thing by ordering a heap of Series 4 to satisfy demand for Elektra. Unfortunately they now have a huge amount of Beast and Punisher figures sitting on the shelves.
Scaling back of secondary characters sounds ominous, I hope the line does not end up consisting of Captain America, Wolverine and Iron Man anytime soon. The great thing about ML is the diversity that can usually be found in the assortments. I tend to buy figures I've never even heard of simply because of how great they look. Unfortunately I will not be buying any more Wolverines, Cap America's or Iron Men or any figure that has previously been released. Not only is it not possible budget wise, but there's also no need when you are happy with the version provided.
I hope that future boxed sets include more incentives than new heads. I've waited a LONG time for Invisible Woman and remember when she was rumoured to be in Series 4 (only to be replaced by Elektra). Its very dissapointing to see her released only in a boxed set with figures I already own. It's also sad that I simply cannot afford to re-purchase 4 figures to get a fifth figure which had virtually been promised a single release. Especially when Sue features no accessories or detail that in fact indicates she is the Invisible woman!?
The Sinister Six box set is more promising as its been impossible to find the SM villains due to the case ratios, plus there are two "all-new" characters, Electro and Black Cat.
I would also LOVE to see 12-18" Galactus and Sentinel. These would be great together or more likely as part of a boxed set with redeco versions of previously released characters.
ML is a GREAT line and my favourite (though SOTA's Street Fighter looks very promising, especially with "fan picks" for assortments), but I would like to see less re-hashes of existing characters and a bit more diversity including more female legends (Scarlett Witch, She-Hulk and Mystique to name a few) and more villains.
Posted by: Xenan at May 12, 2004 04:33 AMI'm not sure I agree with ML being bought more by kids than collectors. Sure maybe the Spider Man and movie lines are, but I never see a kid buying Marvel Legends...it's always adult collectors. AT any rate I loev the figures and keep up the good work!
Posted by: prozac at May 12, 2004 09:21 AMPlease Define Kids and Collectors.
Many people would like to know what the age groups are, the ecomics, demographics etc. Us older kids would be interested.
Other than good article. And yeah you already know I loves me TB and Marvel so yeah crank 'em out. I can take it.
Posted by: pablolobo at May 12, 2004 09:34 AMI really enhjoy the ML line but I'm an old schooler...lets see the likes of YellowJacket,Wonderman,Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver,Luke Cage,Iron Fist, SpiderWoman (Jess Drew)and a Defenders Boxed set featuring Nighthawk, Hellcat and Valkyrie.
I also think a Giant Sized X-men Boxed set would be awesome featuring Classic Storm, Banshee, Sunfire,Thunderbird and Classic Cyclops.
Thanks for all you do!!!
Posted by: Pisces at May 12, 2004 09:49 AMI'm all for a Giant Sized X-Men set, I can't imagine a set I'd like more. However, since we got a GS X-Men set in the pre-ML days, wouldn't you think the chances would be a little slim?
Posted by: Dan at May 12, 2004 10:47 AMFirst i'd like to give Marvel big ups for Marvel Legends line up. I'm stuck between being a collector and a kid but i do purchase them. I would love to see a sentinel and a boxed set of the brotherhood of evil mutants, Alpha Flight, the Nasty boys, Four Horsemen, a Wolverine version of Death, the Neo, an Onslaught and i could keep on going, so in the mean time i'll say "MAKE MINE MARVEL"
Posted by: Mickey at May 12, 2004 11:43 AMHow bout Emma Frost or a Sentinel?
Posted by: icryontheinside at May 12, 2004 12:29 PMWIth the success of this line and the placement all over the mass market, I'd be surprised if collectors make up 30% of the sales. I think Jesse's right on the mark and kids are driving the sales here. And I would say kids were 14 and under.
Posted by: Plan B Jay at May 12, 2004 12:52 PMHey true believers,
I think we need a single pack doc strange, nightcrawler, Mystique, the sandman, Prof. X, and an old school Sunfire.
Also how about a wrecking crew box set.
Stop making us buy the same figures over and over. I know it brings you guys in the extra money, but do it for the fans, not the money.
Make Mine Marvel.
I really dig Toybiz's approach to action figures. I've got a LOT of them. But, I'd like to know what the "numbers" are really telling Jesse Falcon. If kids are propelling Marvel Legends, then why do we see so many Beasts and Punishers warming pegs? Those are cool, poseable, well-known characters at this point. And why doesn't Toybiz make villains available for the Hulk Classics line? I am a collector, but I'd like for figures to be available. If they're promoted in a line, I should be able to find and buy 'em. If not, there needs to be a Marvel Legends Collectors Club or some other option where they'll take pre-orders and produce only as many as they pre-sell.
Anyone else looking for Abomination, or Absorbing man? This's my point.
Posted by: Moldie13 at May 12, 2004 04:19 PMhey xenan i buy tons of marvel legends and im a kid...uh and what by the way my hopes for marvel legends are kingpin,bullseye,nightcrawler,she-hulk,profesor X,ans avengers box set with scarlet witch and quicksilver, and a brotherhood box set with mystique
and no more wolverines and i will never say toy biz is the best company because they dident make any girls for X2 damn you toy biz i love that companie and hate them at the same tome
Marvel Legends rule!! I think the wrecking crew boxed set is an awesome idea! Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man, the Black Knight, i could go on for ever. I own them all, they're all open, and i'll continue to buy them (except wolverine) !
Posted by: buckethead at May 12, 2004 09:28 PMI'd like to put this out there just as a suggestion. Mabey instead of making the chase figures be the only way to get certain figures, red skull for instance, you could just keep those figures to things like the unmasked wolverine. Just a differend head sculpt or something rather than a completely exclusive figure. I know I dont want to shell out the fifty bucks for a goliath or a red skull. And please, make more of the bad guys, more and in higer quantity. We'll buy them I promise.
Posted by: Rob at May 12, 2004 10:43 PMI really agree with marvel man about the thanos and ultron, but can we get another daredevil, bullseye and an avengers boxed set with a wonderman scarlet witch and quicksilver. also how about a grim reaper and crimson dynamo
Posted by: mar-vell at May 12, 2004 10:51 PMI am wondering about why the upcoming Marvel Legends set has so many X-Men characters. I hope this doesn't mean the X-Men classics line has folded. I think the X-Men classics line is great, and would love to see this line grow. I especially like the idea of actions with these figures as opposed to nothing but super posability. As for the Marvel Legends line, I still think the upcoming lines will be great, and I love the additions of the Ultimate characters. I hope to see more Ultimate versions of the heroes such as Hawkeye, Giant Man, Beast, and Wolverine's second, striped outfit. I would also like to see Nighthawk, the Gargoyle, Werewolf by Night,Hannibal King, Wild Child's current look, and Beast's current cat look. I also want to see more movie figures than just a single character. For instance, I want to see Jared Nomak from Blade 2. I would also like to see a couple more characters from the Punisher movie like the Russian and Howard Saint. Make Mine Marvel.
Posted by: Mario at May 12, 2004 11:41 PMI HAVE BEEN BUYING ML SINCE THEY CAME OUT. I WORK AT A RETAIL STORE AND IT'S EVEN HARD FOR ME TO FIND THE ML FIGURES I WANT. I LOVE THE FACT THAT THEY ARE COMMING OUT W/ A DEADPOOL FIGURE. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THAT. TOYBIZ YOU REALLY DO HAVE TO MAKE MORE BAD GUYS AND MORE FEMALES. IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE A BOX SET OF X FACTOR, X FORCE, GEN X, AND MAYBE A BOX SET OF X MEN ONLY IN THE BLUE AND GLOD UNIFORMS. YOU REALLY DO HAVE TO COME UP W/ A PROF X. THE BAD THING ABOUT ML I HAVE TO BUY 2 OF EACH, DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY SON SEES MY FIGURES AND HE WANTS ONE TOO. BAD FOR MY POCKET AND GOOD FOR USE'S. OTHER THEN THAT KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT OTHER FIGURES U COME OUT WITH.
Posted by: DARKWOLF at May 13, 2004 06:18 AMI completely disagree with the notion that kids are buying these toys more than collectors. In my neck of the woods, these figures are being bought strictly by collectors who raid Wal Mart at 2 am with their box knives in order to snatch all the "chase" figures. This leaves folks like me, with jobs, homes, and families, on the losing end of this stupid "chase" figure thing. I simply do not have the time to take overnight trips ranging from Houston to Pensacola raiding the big box stores and cutting open all their cases of figures. You may scoff, but I know of at least 5 people who regularly do this. In other words, PLEASE STOP DOING CHASE FIGURES!!!!
Posted by: Brent at May 13, 2004 06:20 PMJesse, We need a diverse array of characters like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Power Man, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, Shang Chi, Defenders Box set, Thanos, Warlock, Wonder Man, Quicksilver, Yellowjacket, Hellstorm, Doc Samson and Wendigo!
Keep these guys in mind, please; we don't need 8 different Wolverines or multiples of the same character since there are so many legends to choose from.
Please think about this - HARD!! This is what killed the other figure lines.
Posted by: Tony at May 14, 2004 12:50 AMHERCULES PRINCE OF POWER must be made. He is my and my son's favorite character and I am a long time sufferer of not seeing a figure made of him. Please, make one less wolverine and finally do THE SON OF ZEUS. Then I can bestow THE GIFT upon the Hulk.
Posted by: Rich at May 14, 2004 11:41 AMBravo for marvel legends series for making the best Gambit act. Figs, and satisfy my taste for it. Becuz I'm a huge fans of Gambit.. Yea!
Posted by: Ario at May 14, 2004 02:07 PMMarvel legends is great, I've been waiting for this type of articutlation in my favorite marvel figures, toybiz has always been the best. Its too bad toybiz cant get the rights to dc characters because all of the batman & superman ect... have the least amount of articutlation possible (5) they suck, but I also enjoy the x-men classics, but I think it should be without the bulky retarded "action features"(wolverine has a large annoying box on his back)other than that they fit right into the marvel legends series (archangel/cyclops!!!!). But one thing I would like to see is a good wolverine. Possibly the most adored character in the marvel universe, I just want a figure that has the best, unlike the ml wolverine, the "re-used torso sculpt/T-waist with rounded thigh joints" destroyed the articulation, and look of the whole figure. no crouching battle ready action posses, and you can barely lift his shoulders at all. no need to talk about the ultra-kid safe soft flimsy claws, toy biz went cheap on my most anticipated wolverine figure. Overall ML is the best keep up the good work!
Posted by: Rashonn at May 14, 2004 05:05 PM2 words: Captain Britain!!!!!!
Posted by: Jon F at May 14, 2004 08:01 PMI'm a huge fan of the ML line as well, and I get to see a lot of them working at my local Toys 'R' Us. My question is if it'll ever be possible to get the really extreme articulation as found in the McFarlane Spiderman books? I would really love a super-articulated Spidey, even beyond the point of realism. Thus far, all the Spideys I've seen just don't seem quite right when I pose them crawling up a wall or hunched in a squat.
Posted by: Nimy at May 15, 2004 01:46 AMi agree whole heartedly that the ML line is the best line out there, the articulation and detail is phenomenal! i really hope that they start learning the lessons of what has happened with the heman and batman lines and their apparent demise and start learning to do even case packs and stop chase figs all together. i think everyone is tired of not being able to get the figures they want because they arent produced in high enough quantities. that goes for kids as well as collectors. we have a 5 yr. old boy here at home and as much as he loves his spidey and wolverine, the good guys cant just fight other good guys! the kids know who the bad guys are and they do want them. for example...he wants a bullseye to fight his daredevil, a sandman or mysterio to go up against spidey! these kids see the stuff out there and they want it just as bad as we do! do the right thing jesse and start making more figures! i realize you want a collectible out there and some are more limited, but most of your collectors wanna open these things! they look too good to keep in plastic prisons! make em available for everybody, if you build them we will come!
Posted by: jay leichty at May 15, 2004 05:01 PMMarvel Legends are without a doubt the best thing out there right now. More villains and supporting characters from the major teams would be nice fits in the Legends line. Characters like Multiple Man, Psylocke (the asian version), Emma Frost ( which would probably be the hottest figure ever made), Angel(before apocalypse turned him to Death), Captain Britain, Longshot, Havok, Power Man, Iron Fist,Black Panther, more figures from the Ultimate Universe, and more secret identity characters, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Ultimate Peter Parker, Logan, etc etc....big ups on the Bruce Banner figure in the series 2 line of Hulk classics....heres hoping i find one. Should never have canceled the X-men line....thumbs down for no female figures from The X2 movie. Lose the chase figures altogether. The scale of the figures are perfect I love how Colossus and Thor tower over every other ML figure. Cant wait for Juggernaut. Love the box set idea what a way to grab the whole F4 at one time. Hate the idea of spreading a small team out over different series. In the beggining you had Thing felt like en eternity until his teamates were available. Keep that in mind. Cant wait for the Ultimate Captain America figure. Keep up the good work.

Posted by: theseus at May 16, 2004 01:18 AMI would really love figures of Dr. Strange and Black Panther. How about a better figure of Howard the Duck. Maybe even Slapstick.
Posted by: yeti at May 16, 2004 10:41 PMOkay, enough with every Wolverine version/costume whatever! Two mutants that never got a great toybiz action figure : Shadowcat(Which was a toyfare exclusive and came with no accessories) and Jubilee( never came in her original X-men uniform, hello Generation x.) Come on I had to get my favorite character- Rogue in a box set! I'm sure that everyone would like a Shadowcat Marvel Legend! She is really the one of the first female X-women since Jean Grey and Storm. And Jubilee is a classic. You could do a Shadowcat figure that comes with her dragon Lockeed. There are a couple Marvel Legends that come with sidekicks, this would be the best one!

Posted by: lincoln at May 21, 2004 09:05 AMI see a couple of hits for Wonder Man out there. Which Wonder Man do you think should be made? 1.) 1970's George Perez (Safari jacket, glasses)2.) 1980's West Coast Avengers (no glasses, sleeveless.) 3.) Current Version (Blue Ionic Energy.) The version that I grew up with was 1. I realize it is a little dated, but I would still love to have that figure.
Posted by: Steve at May 23, 2004 10:32 PMI agree that TB needs to cease with all the multiple wolvies! I think I'm not alone in wanting a "Hercules" figure made! He has NEVER had a figure made of him! How can TB make a figure of "Black Widow" ahead of the son of Zeus! Also TB, pleeeeeze give us die hard avengers fans figures of Thanos,Ultron,Taskmaster,Count Nefaria & last but not least a "Masters of evil" box set that includes the wrecking crew, tigershark,Mr.Hyde & 10'inch goliath!

ghostrider is probably my personal favorite.
i don't mean to sound ungrateful.
but why hasn't the most powerful being in marvel been made yet?
i'm of course speeking of thanos,
the mad titan.
biuld him a bit bigger than the hulk.
and for crimmanies sake make him with the infinity gauntlet.
thanks,
keep up the great work.

Please make nightcrawler, u.s. agent, sandman, ultron, mandarin, and jack of hearts because I think they would be awesome.
Posted by: Aaron Poe at June 6, 2004 05:04 PMthese are some of the best action firgures i have ever seen. honestly now though do we really need chase figures the only places you can get them are ebay and probably comic cons and cant find em for cheap. think about it this way if we were making them would you want easy access to them. yes yes i know you want to make collectors items but you would make so many people so happy if we didnt have to "chase" figures. other than that keep up the good work and i think we need more villains and less wolverine.
Posted by: eric at June 11, 2004 03:04 AMThanos and Adam Warlock are great ideas for the ML line, but while on that topic, why not an Infinity Gauntlet series boxed set? But perhaps that is a bit old a series to do a set of, but still it would be neat-o! As would a Secret Wars set. More West Coast Avengers figures would be nice as well.
Otherwise a perfect line.

Posted by: dbgt at June 29, 2004 06:40 AMI would be collecting Marvel Legends today if the scalpers and hoarders didn't ruin it for me.
These are great figures.
But barely two weeks after Juggernaut was released, he was already going for more than twice SRP here. The same thing happened with Colossus... Imagine how the Chase figures are doing... I can never complete my Avengers line up unless I wanna pay $100 for Goliath. And as an opener, I can't justify that mark up.
I'm glad they came out with the Sinister Six boxed set, which box sets seem to be more scalper proof...I dropped the line two waves ago but picked up this boxed set.
I may yet get Hawkeye and Vision but if scalpers get to em first, I'm selling my other Avengers figures and quitting altogether.
Too bad cause this is a cool line.
