Art Asylum's Adam Unger Discusses Batman Begins

Comic book fans are loyal. Sales of individual titles may rise and fall over time, but the folks who love comics tend to be devoted to their favorite characters. Art Asylum Vice President Adam Unger has seen this fidelity firsthand. From his office in New York, he says, “What I laugh about is now, nobody’s doing new (characters)… They’re digging out these old characters and putting new spins on them, and you know what? It’s fun. On the comic side, I sort of like it. I think the industry should be totally jacked up that not only is a new ‘Batman’ movie coming out, but a new ‘Superman’ movie, and ‘The Fantastic Four.’ I can’t imagine anybody being more excited.”

The upcoming release of the motion picture “Batman Begins” will prompt an assortment of A.A.’s popular MiniMates block figures. Unger says, “We are as excited as we can be to work on ‘Batman,’ to see the daily stuff from the movie and read the script and get dug in on the new movie. With a writer like David Goyer and (Christopher) Nolan directing, this is going to be a ‘Batman’ fan’s dream, from what I can see. It’s edgy. It’s what every fan has been waiting for, outside of the last two campy movies that came out. It’s serious take on Batman. For us, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to drive a lot of product. Kids who are four to eight (currently purchasing MiniMates) are not going to get into it, but for us, Batman is a special property because you’ve got the animated series really clicking with kids. Our focus will be on the movie, but when the movie stuff launches, you’ll probably see us go into the animated series as being our focal point for product.”
