Review - Hush Series 2 Superman

HushSupermanB.jpg Hush Series 2 Superman Review

I'll start this by saying that I'm not really a DC Direct guy, anymore. I've really started to cut most of my collecting, except for the Marvel Legends stuff. That said, I still scan the new DCD stuff for the occasional figure that looks interesting to me.

Hush's series 2 Superman is not only interesting to me, but has very quickly become one of my favorite renditions of the Man of Steel. I'm pretty sure that once I've actually got my collection out of storage, he'll replace my JLA Superman in my display. Let's get to it...

Articulation
Ankle- hinge joint
Knee- hinge
Thigh- standard cut hinge
Elbow- hinge
Neck- ball-jointed, with slight limitation (he can look up and down, but not more than about 60 degrees, left and right)
Shoulder- ball-joint with serious limits (when moving his arms straight out to the sides, they only rise about 45 to 50 degrees, not straight out in a "T" shape)

Overall, the articulation is pretty decent, but he really could have used a few more POA. I would like to have seen bicep swivels, and a waist cut at least. The limits on his range of movement are a little disappointing, but aren't too terrible. He can't sit down, or hold either of his arms straight out at their sides, but he is (after all) Superman, and looks best floating or throwing a punch.

Paint
Really a fantastic job, here. All of the lines are sharp and there's no slop or poorly placed apps. The green on the leaves on his neck and right arm are shaded in such a way that the vines and leaves are different colors, but don't affect the costume or skin-tones. The choice of painting his eyes red is superb. I've never seen a more menacing look on a Superman. He looks like he's ready to cut you in half with his heat-vision. They're done in a deep red, which looks really cool, and not as cartoony as a brighter shade would have made him.

Sculpt
This is a really fantastic sculpt. The proportions and musculature scream "Superman!". There's no getting around how nice this piece looks. If you like Jim Lee's work, you'll love this figure. It looks like he flew out of the comic and into your home. The only complaint I have concerning the look and sculpt are his legs. They look a bit long for a guy his height. The sculpt could have lost about 1/4 of an inch from the thighs and it would've helped. His cape is "tattered", like he's just been put through the ringer, and it is swept to his left side, as if blowing in the wind. Very nice effect, especially when placed on his stand.

Accessories
Superman comes with the "Batman" logo stand (with two extra foot-pegs), and some rubble that can also plug into the stand where the foot-pegs can go. He also comes with a metal pole that's almost as tall as he is, which can be plugged into a hole in the rocks and a hole in his back. Using the stand gives the illusion that he's floating a few inches off the shelf. It's very cool, and is less intrusive than the "action stands" that some of the new ML figures come with.

Overall
This is a really "super" figure. As I said, I will probably be giving the "Superman" slot on my shelf to this rendition. So far, he's my favorite sculpt of this truly iconic character. I'd easily give him a 9 out of 10. He'd be a 10 if he had slightly better articulation, but he didn't get penalized all that much for it. I try not to expect DCD to do ML-style figures, nor do I expect ToyBiz to put out DCD-type figures
