Review Week Day 3 - Modern Iron Man from Marvel Legends series 8

Here's the scoop on the Modern Iron Man figure from Marvel Legends series 8:

Articulation

Please keep in mind, each joint I list is for one side of the figure, except for the mid-line stuff like waist and neck, etc.

Toes/mid-foot - hinge
Ankle – side to side
Ankle – up and down
Mid-calf – cut-joint
Knee – double joint
Top of thigh cut-joint just below the hip ball
Hips - ball-jointed
Waist – belt-line cut-joint
Mid-abdominal – ab-hinge (limited, due to the armor plates on his stomach)
Shoulder - ball-jointed (sort-of)
Shoulder – There’s an odd, extra ball in the shoulder, which allows for some of the movement that is limited by the armor
Bicep – cut-joint at the bottom of the shoulder ball, much like the hip joint
Elbow – double joint
Mid-forearm – cut-joint
Wrist – hinge (only moves forward, can’t do the “repulsor blast” pose due to armor on the hand/wrist)
First Finger - hinge
Second Finger - hinge
Third Finger - hinge
Pinky Finger - hinge
Neck – hinge at the bottom of neck
Neck – ball-joint at the top of his neck (which is limited a bit more than Ult. Cap)

Sculpt

The detailing on this figure is really fantastic. The armor and face are just amazing. This is miles ahead of the sculpt on the ML1 version. Several of the plates of the armor look like individual pieces that are overlayed (like they should). It’s hard to even convey how detailed the Ultimate Cap. and Modern Iron Man are. They really need to be seen to be believed. From the tread on his boots all the way to the removable mask, it’s one of the nicest figures yet. The only complaint I have is the mask. It looks OK in person, but it’s still got that “duck bill” thing going on. I’ve heard other people say that the arms are too skinny, but if you rotate the biceps inward a little, thy look fine. Another thing to note is the shoulder-pads. They are attached so that they can flip up or down, allowing the arms to move more freely.

Paint

The paint is really tight on this figure. The deep red armor accents are kept separate from the yellow/gold really well. There’s minimal bleed, and everything looks perfect from a few inches away. You have to get pretty close to notice any bleed (and what there is of it is very slight). Tony Stark’s face is also really nicely painted. There’s no bleed or slop.

Accessories

Aside from the removable mask, Modern Iron Man comes with a pretty nice base. It’s a “melted” steel wall, with 5 defeated Ultron torsos strewn around in front of the wall. There’s pretty nice detailing on the base. The sculpt and the paint on the base is all very good. It really makes me want an Ultron figure.

Overall

I have to give this Iron Man a solid 8 out of 10. The only thing that I don’t like about the sculpt is the face-mask, and the only other drawback is the fact that the armor limits some of the range of motion on some of the joints. Otherwise, it’s really a solid figure, and is another great example of how ToyBiz is improving their sculpts by leaps and bounds
