REVIEW: Mega Bloks' Spider-Man 3 "Secret Lab Assault"

Spider-Man 3 is perhaps one of the most anticipated films of 2007 and along with it, comes a lot of collectibles and toy licenses. MEGA BLOKS has released a series of Spider-Man 3 building sets that children and collectors will love to build and play with.

The packaging is very colorful and features the mini-figures from the set in action photos as well some very dynamic illustrations of the film’s characters. The packaging is made of sturdy cardboard and is pretty easy to open with the help of a parent is it requires use of scissors or a blade to cut the tape and twist ties.

The set includes a 12 inch plastic bust of Spider-Man and two mini figures ( New Goblin with glider and Spider-Man). The figures are very detailed for the size they are and painted very well articulated as well. These figures are a lot more detailed that Lego people which adds a little more to the toy.

The Spider-Man 3 set is pretty easy to put together with very detailed colored instructions, but over all, frustrating. The main issue I had with this set was the sturdiness of the pieces. The main floor panels and second level platform did not lock very well to the main structure and tore apart a lot of my already built pieces. This proved to be a bit stressful for my son and I because we spent 2 hours trying to build something that should only take 30 minutes.

When all the pieces ARE built and fastened together, they do manage to stay attached to the rest of the structure holding together all the loose pieces that keep falling off. Patience.

In the playability department this set scores some very high points since it features a shooting cannon that launches pumpkin bombs and a working railing system that transports pumpkin bombs from the upper level to a containment unit below. My son spent plenty of time shooting pumpkin bombs at the mini-figures included with the set and at me as well!

This building set will definitely appeal to children but not so much for adults. At a price point of $19.99, the price is right and not too high. This building set is great for kids to develop their motor skills and doubles as a cool playset with working parts. This will make a great gift for that little one that loves to build stuff or any Spider-Man fan!

Mega Bloks' Spider-Man 3 "Secret Lab Assault" and other great Spider-Man building block toys can be found at most mass market retail stores as well as online via Mega Bloks's webstore.
