In 1940 Will Eisner created the masked hero The Spirit, whose exploits ran in Sunday newspaper comic strips before 'graduating' to comic books. In it, Detective Denny Colt, after nearly dying and returning from suspended animation, took to the streets in costume as The Spirit to fight crime and uphold justice!

In the works for a while now, Frank Miller's Will Eisner's The Spirit is gaining traction with a completed script (also written by Frank Miller) and new casting. Joining Gabriel Macht as Denny Colt/The Spirit and Samuel L. Jackson as his arch-enemy Octopus are Eva Mendes (Sand Saref), Scarlett Johansson (Silken Floss), Sarah Paulson (Dr. Ellen Dolan), Dan Lauria (Police Commisioner), Stana Katic (rookie), Johnny Simmons (young Denny Colt), and Louis Lombardi (Phobos).

Fans still have a bit of a wait, though. The Spirit currently has a release date of January 16, 2009.
