Nicholson is quoted as saying, "I'm Furious...But if it's a good movie, I'll catch up with it somewhere. I don't think they ever really [re]captured Tim Burton's spirit [since he stopped being involved]. They kind of drove the franchise into the ground".
Nicholson also commented on his not being approached for the role in The Dark Knight, his reasons for doing the original film, and his feelings on Tim Burton. From the full interview , it is unclear if Nicholson realizes that 2005's Batman Begins and next year's The Dark Knight are wholly separate from the Burton movies and a reboot for the Batman character.
Furthermore, it should be noted that Nicholson, who turned 70 as principal photography was starting for TDK, is not the original on-screen Joker. The 1966 film, Batman, featured the talented actor, Cesar Romero, as The Clown Prince of Crime. No interviews of Romero comparing Burton's Batman film to the 1966 film could be found.
