Marvel continues its onslaught against online comic pirating, with another comic site being forced to stop trafficking Marvel's books. After the recent events surrounding Z Cult, another free comic download site called "ComicSearch", wrote an open letter to Marvel explaining the importance of free downloads in the internet age and comic sales; but the publisher immediately responded with a cease and desist order. As a result, the site has removed all trackers for Marvel comics.
Marvel's sudden interest in online piracy should not surprise the online fan community, given that the company recently began its own online comic downloading and subscription service at Marvel.com. Some think that MArvel's aggressive tactics in removing competition will hurt them in the long run, much like the RIAA's attack on Napster and music downloaders hurt music sales. One should note however, that these sites should not be competition for Marvel's audience, as they have no right to Marvel's product. Furthermore, Marvel has yet to go after any comic downloaders themselves, an act which proved the primary mistake for the RIAA.
