Sideshow Collectibles has never limited themselves to a single collectible medium. From its inception, the company has experimented with a variety of materials, subjects, sizes, and products. One of their most interesting offerings to date is their Legendary Scale Busts. These classically designed collectibles in the 1:3 scale are cast in high quality polystone and feature some of Sideshow’s most detailed and vivid work to date. Their recent Legendary Scale Wolverine Bust is a perfect example of the line, featuring one of the most charismatic characters in the Marvel Universe.
Wolverine is packaged in full-color box covered with full photos of the bust as well as a character description. Held in place with a Styrofoam unit, the bust is well-protected and secure.
Wolverine’s sculpt is absolutely amazing. It’s so good, in fact, that Sideshow really showed me something I’d never seen. Wolverine appears in one of his most popular costumes, the yellow and blue combo from the Jim Lee Era of the X-men; and the master sculptors at Sideshow perfectly capture the texture of his costume, down to the stitches. It's so accurate that I thought they used fabric over the polystone sculpt. They didn't, but you wouldn't know that just by looking at the piece. I’ve never seen sculpted polystone look like fabric this accurately. It was the first thing I noticed, particularly on Wolverine’s mask, and it was quite stunning.
The rest of the bust is at the same level of quality, with Logan’s likeness matched to the comic, right down to the watchful eyes. The cigar also looks fantastic, and the shoulder armor is fully realized with battle scratches and dents. I’m really happy with Sideshow’s artistic choices with this sculpt, primarily because the combo of the battle damage on the shoulders and the lit cigar give Wolverine the appearance of having just finished battle and celebrating with a smoke. It’s an iconic look for the legendary character, and Sideshow really captures it in this bust.
Wolverine’s base is a sturdy, black pedestal identical to other bases in this line by Sideshow. The bottom of the base shows the item’s number as well as name. It’s a perfect base for the item and draws attention to the bust without being distracting. Wolverine includes no accessories, but his mask is a separate piece that slides into the back of the bust.
Wolverine’s sculpt is brought to life through Sideshow’s painstakingly detailed paint applications. At this level of collectible, Sideshow has their products hand-painted and finished to ensure accuracy, and this piece shows it. From the details of Wolverine’s cigar to the scrapes and dents in his armor, the vibrant paint apps on this figure are really eye-catching and impressive.
priced at $199.99 and limited to only 500 pieces, this Legendary Scale bust is sure to sell out fast. As one of Marvel’s most legendary and popular characters, Wolverine is a perfect hero to begin or enhance one’s bust collection.
