In a recent interview with UK press, Maggie Gyllenhaal divulged some information regarding her role in the upocming Batman film, The Dark Knight. Gyllenhaal is quoted as saying:

"Chris Nolan, the director, would joke about how I had to resign myself to being a little bit of a damsel in distress but he pushed me in other ways to make her a powerful character. I play a lawyer and have real relationships with the people I’m interacting with in the movie. She’s very smart and a real rounded person. Of course, if you’re the girl in Batman, you’re going to be a damsel in distress to some extent but she’s a really great character."

Obviously, all actors are trained to say they play "great characters" in their upcoming films, but given Gyllenhaal's career in independent cinema, fans can be confident that Rachel Dawes may be a more developed and deep female lead in this film than in the last one. Many critics cited the performance of Katie Holmes as the Rachel Dawes' character in Batman Begins as the film's greatest weakness; but the well-respected and talented Gyllenhaal will, hopefully, be much stronger in the role.

The rest of the interview was focused on other roles in Gyllenhaal's career, but you can still read it in full at the below link.
