Christopher Nolan recently spoke with the Los Angeles Times to discuss The Dark Knight, and his news was unexpected but welcome. Many fans thought The Joker was going to be the primary focus of Knight; but that is not the case, according to Nolan. The director is reported as saying,

"Harvey Dent is a tragic figure, and his story is the backbone of this film,...The Joker, he sort of cuts through the film -- he's got no story arc, he's just a force of nature tearing through. Heath has given an amazing performance in the role, it's really extraordinary."

Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart, was previously portrayed on screen by Tommy Lee Jones in Joel Schumacher's 1995 film, Batman Forever; but Nolan assured fans that his take on Two-face will not be so over-the-top. "It's a dark and complex story," Nolan said, "and the villains are dark and complex as well."

The number of villains in this film may be disconcerting to fans who remember the derailing of the Batman film franchise in the late 1990s. At present, reports of as many as five possible villains--Two-Face, Joker, Scarecrow, Edward Nygma ("The Riddler"), and a mob boss--have surfaced, but neither WB nor Nolan has confirmed the importance of each or their guaranteed involvement in The Dark Knight, less the first two named above. Skeptics should note that Batman Begins had three major villains who were balanced and well-developed. Hopefully, Nolan can reprise that success with this picture.

The Dark Knight opens July 18, 2008, everywhere.
