CW has announced that their Superman-themed show, Smallville has been picked up for an eighth season. After beginning on WB Network, Smallville moved to the CW and will become the longest running show on the network's current slate as of next season. Despite losing viewers after this season's premiere, Smallville continues to create ancillary revenues for the CW through soundtrack releases, novels, a DC comic book, and trading cards. The fact that this renewal announcement has hit so early should be of great encouragement to fans, as it shows them that the network has real confidence in the program and where it is headed. CW's other Thursday Night program, Supernatural, has also been renewed.
