Navigating the rich and vast sea of Marvel collectibles can be exhausting, but knowing the landscape is imperative to making an informed decision where best to spend one’s money. One such superhero with a slew of merchandise is Iron Man. Just in time for his movie debut, 'ol Shell Head has a full line of action figures now hitting the market with more collectibles on the way. And while all these toys are cool, those seeking something truly unique need to look no further than the Iron Man Subcast.

Produced by Upper Deck, the Marvel Subcasts are a stylized line of polyresin statues with the urban collector in mind. However, even those not into the underground designer toy scene can appreciate the fine craftsmanship and aesthetic allure of these collectibles. Below, we’ll be reviewing the incredible Iron Man Subcast, one of four superheroes currently available in this series!

Iron Man comes packaged in a wonderfully illustrated windowless box. The overall packaging presentation is fantastic. The box honestly looks like some sort of recharging station for the IM armor thanks to the high gloss coat and the fantastic art. This is a box you’ll want to keep long after getting the Subcast out and putting it on display.

The sculpt on Iron Man is unique and wonderful. The pose elicits a feeling of static action, with IM holding his repulsor beam out, aimed downward, as though he is prepped to fire at a fallen enemy beneath him. The sculpt is highly stylized but still distinctly recognizable as the Marvel tin man, with his signature paint scheme and Mark III armor on display.

The paint applications are a very simple three tone color scheme of red, yellow, and white. The use of bright, and crisp colors gives the figure a bold and vibrant appearance, though I would have preferred the paint be a high gloss, giving the statue a metallic sheen.

Iron Man is cast in resin, and you can feel the weight of the material when holding the statue. He’s a strong and sturdy piece, but I would not recommend carrying him by his head or arms.

Considering that most designer VINYL toys carry a hefty price tag of at least $50, and most polyresin busts begin at over $50, the Iron Man Subcast is a deal at a SRP of $70. Frankly, at that price it’s a value. Iron Man is a full statue, not merely a bust; and its unique design adds a level of artistic collectibility worth a few extra dollars.

Overall, this Iron Man Subcast from Upper Deck is a solid piece. It’s a one-of-a-kind Iron Man collectible that will surely stand out in any collection. It’s detailed sculpt, combined eye-popping colors, make for an eye-catching piece that is aesthetically interesting and interpretative, and fans who want something special for their Iron Man collection will definitely want to be sure to pick this statue up.
