So, what happens when you take the popular series X-Men: First Class, which tells the tales never covered in the original X-Men series; and turns the focus on Wolverine and Kitty Pryde’s early days together at the X-Mansion? Well, Marvel wondered that same thing. And the results of that thought is Wolverine: First Class. The book, which is on it’s second issue as of last Wednesday; tells the tale of Katherine ‘Kitty’ Pryde and her early days after first arriving at the Xavier’s School for the Gifted and her initial interactions with Wolverine
The book itself is very well done. Writer Fred Van Lente and Artist Andrea Di Vito are a strong team. The art in the book by Di Vito is nice and crisp, and at times kind of pays homage to Chris Claremont’s run on the book in the early 80’s and artist John Byrne from that same period. The characters at times seem to have leapt from those issues and it is very well done. Van Lente does a great job of capturing these early days between two very different people who would become very close friends and allies.
Issue two is a fun little tale. Kitty has tickets to see Dazzler at Madison Square Garden, but of course she isn’t old enough to actually drive there. So, after speaking to Professor Xavier, she is left with a task to find someone to drive her and her friends to the concert in Charles’ family limo. Except, well…she has no luck. And the last person she asks is Wolverine. Of course, Logan says no in a way that is purely Wolverine and leaves Kitty trying to scheme and plan a way to go. In doing so, she discovers Wolverine’s birthday is coming up and decides to throw him a party. She even invites Lady Mariko, Wolverine’s love.
But, what Kitty didn’t count on is a man named Sabertooth and how, on every birthday Wolverine has, he tracks him down and tries to turn Wolverine into small chunks of meat. After a fun battle between Wolverine and Sabertooth in a Ninja themed restaurant, Kitty saves the day and Wolverine ultimately agrees to drive her to the concert.
This is one of those series where you end up picking it up on really nothing more than a whim and you end up with a surprising good book. It’s really worth adding to your collection and adding to the books you purchase every month. We here at Superherotimes.com think you may be pleasantly surprised!
