Anyone familiar with Jim Starlin's recent space epics will find themselves at home with Rann/Thanagar Holy War. Combining the the original Rann/Thanagar War series with aspects from 52, Countdown to Adventure, and Countdown to Mystery, Starlin has pieced together a story based upon the new religions that have taken root on the enemy planets of Rann and Thanagar. Assembled is a cavalcade of characters ranging from lesser known heroes like Comet and Starman to the more mainstream Hawkman and Adam Strange, and even tossing in appearances from the JLA, The Teen Titans, and Bizarro.
The story hops around a lot, showing the different characters and homeworlds and giving some backgrounds and insights, while setting up for something that will unite them all. The story is somewhat mirroring the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, so it might get dicey in the future depending on how far he takes the analogy and where he pushes the politics, but for now it's story of two sides who don't agree and a mysterious force that seems to be directing them to conflict.
The art from Ron Lim and Rob Hunter is crisp and clean and really helps you to quickly identify each character. With all the different characters involved, it would be easy to get confused, especially to new readers who might otherwise be unfamiliar with DC's sci-fi offerings. Even the five different locations look unique enough to help you keep things straight.
While the first issue is far from an overwhelming success, there's a lot here to enjoy. Sci-fi fans and those who enjoyed the Starfire/Adam Strange/Animal Man story in 52 will find themselves happily alongside those who have been reading all of Starlin's recent DC outer space work. This is issue 1 of 8, and has a cover price of $3.50 and is available at your local comic book shop!
