Secret Invasion 3 ramps up the action as the battle shifts from the Savage Land to downtown New York City. Writer Brian Michael Bendis lines up a slew of Marvel Comics' characters to join the war, and at least one hero is left questioning his allegiance.
The issue pops around a bit at first, showing us the current location of Skrull Jarvis, checking in on the Thunderbolts, and pausing at the Initiative training facility at Camp Hammond before getting to the battle in New York City. The Young Avengers take the focus as they attempt to drive back the Skrull forces. Unfortunately for them, a new band of Super Skrulls have arrived that combine the powers of several Marvel characters into one.
Imagine battling a Skrull with the armor of Colossus, Wolverine's claws, and Cyclops' optical blasts. Now, imagine a dozen of these amalgamated horrors attacking the city. This is what the Young Avengers have to deal with. Luckily for them, the heroes of The Initiative appear to fight beside them.
During the melee, Tony Stark is shown in the Savage Land attempting to salvage his armor while the Skrull Tech Virus continues to play havoc with his body. Spider-Woman shows her true colors and tells Iron Man some very interesting information. It is unclear if this is a major reveal or a red herring, but it's a fun plot point either way.
Back at Times Square, the Vision falls to the Super Skrull army along with a few members of the Initiative. It appears as if all hope is lost and that the Skrull army has victory firmly within its grasp. Finally, Nick Fury makes his return to Marvel Comics with a new team of commandos and a weapon that appears to destroy the Super Skrulls with ease.
Leinil Yu continues to impress with his artistic skills. Every character, from heavy-hitters like Iron Man to B-listers like Echo, look great and are obviously drawn with care. Some of his best work is within the Tony Stark dialog pages. The emotional impact is heightened by Yu's handling of the scene and representation of the characters.
Few issues on the stands today are as expertly crafted as Secret Invasion 3. This issue carries a cover price of $3.99 and is available at your local comic book store.
