Much like the other Avengers book released this week, (New Avengers 42) Mighty Avengers 15 follows the storyline of Hank Pym and how he came to be replaced by a member of the Skrull invasion army as chronicled in the Secret Invasion mini-series. Unlike New Avengers 42 which was focused on the Spider-Woman impersonating Skrull Queen, Hank Pym’s story is less important in the grand scheme of things, but is still a very well told story full of interesting hops down Avengers history.

Henry Pym a.k.a. Ant-Man a.k.a. Giant-Man a.k.a. Goliath a.k.a. Yellowjacket had a turbulent marriage to The Wasp a.k.a. Giant-Woman a.k.a. Janet Pym. This distressed relationship allowed for a Skrull operative disguised as a young college student to gain his trust and ultimately led to an affair. It was during this time that Pym was replaced and as Janet moved to reconcile the marriage, the Skrull operative took his place within Tony Stark’s trusted circle.

Unlike the Spider-Woman story in New Avengers 42, Pym’s story isn’t filled with as many forehead-slapping moments of amazement as we see the revelations unfold. Instead, we gain a keener insight into the process that lead to his being replaced and the Skrull invasion moving ahead. It’s a much more relaxed story, but one that long time readers will still certainly enjoy and find well worth the cover price.

John Romita Jr. provides the pencils but is inked by both Klaus Janson and Tom Palmer. The result is that some of the pages have a remarkably different feel as each inker has a unique style. It can seem a bit startling to jump from one set to the other, but neither is poorly done or takes away from the overall story.

With remarkably less to work with on Henry Pym than Jessica Drew, Brian Michael Bendis still manages to construct a story that die-hard Avengers readers will no doubt enjoy. Mighty Avengers 15 is available now for the retail price of $2.99.
