Universal Publishing, a division of Rizzoli International Publications, has released an amazing new hardbound book featuring the art of Christopher Nolan’s recent big screen return to Batman. Having released some amazing art books in the past, including V for Vendetta: From Script to Film and Speed Racer: The Art of Speed Racer, Universal's newest title does not disappoint. The dust jacket features pencil line artwork of Batman on the Batpod and an artist's rendering of Bruce Wayne’s new sanctuary on the front cover as well as poster artwork of Batman on the Batpod flying through the air on the back. Removing the dust jacket, fans find an amazing painted image of the late Heath Ledger as The Joker on the front and Christian Bale as Batman on the back.

Informative and fun, the text - written by Craig Byrne - provides insight on everything from the creation of the new armored Batsuit and the collaboration between the art department to Nolan and Ledger bringing to life a realistic Joker. There are 65 pages of production artwork to admire before the book switches gears and goes into the shooting script, featured here in its entirety. Written by Jonathon Nolan and Christopher Nolan, the script is an amazing read, but is a slight disappointment since a book like this should deliver a more in-depth look at the production of the film through the art department's eyes. A small gripe, but worth mentioning as many fans may expect this to include more artwork.

An amazing, albeit short, look into the work that went into the making of this summer’s biggest film, The Art of The Dark Knight is as satisfying as the film itself in many ways and is available in book stores for the retail price of $35.
