Thanks to Hot Toys, collectors had several amazing 1/6 scale figures to add to their collection in 2009. Many popular films like Robocop, Terminator Salvation and Predator were represented in the popular Movie Masterpiece Series. One particular license which has a lot of potential is that of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. We begin the New Year with an inside look at the first figure from this popular new series, MMS X-Men Origins 1/6 scale Wolverine.

PACKAGING: The package design on this particular figure is a lot less elaborate in comparison to previous figure releases. It seems that Hot Toys has simplified the overall design of the box in order to keep the price point of these collectibles at an affordable cost for collectors. The Wolverine figure is enclosed in a shoe box styled package which features subtle images of the actual product on the sides of the lid and one large image of Logan on the back of the package. The cardboard lid features a great looking embossed metallic image of Wolverine’s adamantium claws with the movie logo underneath.

There is also a removable cardboard insert on the inside of the box with an additional high resolution image of the MMS Logan figure. The figure is sandwiched between two protective plastic trays with an additional plastic cover on top. I have always been a big fan of the unique design and look of the packaging on MMS figures and although this one is not as intricate as previous releases, it still looks great.

SCULPT: The portrait on the figure bares an uncanny likeness and realism to actor Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Logan in the film. The facial sculpt looks amazingly life-like and features intricate details which make it hard to distinguish the difference between the figure and actual movie stills. Logan has a newly-developed hirsute upper body which consists of a True Type body with a rubberized muscular sculpted exterior. The arms and neck are uniquely sculpted with a life-like rubberized material which maintains the realistic look of the figure when displayed shirtless. Even the interchangeable hands feature life-like hair details which truly enhance the overall look of the figure and making it by-far one of the most realistic looking MMS figures so far. This brand new figure is a great example of how Hot Toys continues to push the envelope in an effort to produce the most realistic looking 1/6 scale figures in the market today.

PAINT: The figure is painted with the highest level of accuracy and precision as is expected from an MMS collectible. The already incredibly detailed sculpt is complimented by the remarkable individually hand paint techniques of Hot Toys' artists. This figure features added paint details which have not been present in any previous MMS release such as life-like veins and hair on the face, neck, upper body and arms. With a flawless paint job and its additional life-like decorations, the MMS X-Men Origins Wolverine figure is a true masterpiece.

ARTICULATION: Unlike previous MMS releases, Wolverine sports a heavily articulated body thanks to his newly developed muscular body. By covering the True Type base body’s upper torso with a skin-textured outer dermis, Hot Toys has made it possible for all the joints on the figure to function without the limitations which have plagued previous releases like Hellboy and the Predator Dutch figure. The muscular arms were specially developed for this figure and offer a wider range of motion by leaving the main joints uncovered and exposed. In the past, Hot Toys has given muscle-bound MMS figures a rubberized outer layer to hide joints and I am glad they did not stick to that concept with Wolverine since it would have significantly limited the poseability on the figure. Overall, Hot Toys has once again exceeded my expectations with this amazingly constructed and versatile body.

ACCESSORIES: Although this figure is not accessory-heavy, it includes some very detailed apparel accessories. The apparel on this figure is very high quality and has no noticeable threading or defects. The clothing is very easy to remove and looks very life-like on the figure.

OVERALL: Once again Hot Toys has exceeded my expectations with this amazingly life-like and versatile 1/6 scale figure of Wolverine. Although this figure will run you about $150, it’s worth every penny and an absolute must-have for all Wolverine fans.
